Goodbye Peeve's

by Abby Blackstone, Goodtimes Ombudsman

Editor's note: the other day I posted a piece about Peeve's and I was pretty hard on them. Abby Blackstone disagreed with my opinion and I asked her to write on the subject as well so that all sides could be heard.

Despite everything, I'm going to miss Peeve's. Peeve's may not have been great at everything, but they were really great at one thing: being a bar Downtown.

If you live Downtown, where else could you go to have a drink?

Let's look at the options.

First there's Club Brazil, which made GBF's nominees for Best Dive Bar in Fresno.

Then you have Club One Casino. Which could be an option but drinking and gambling don't mix well.

Next up there's Mezcal Bar & Grill, which, despite the names of every place I've listed so far, is the first Club on the list.

And don't forget Kocky's, which is pretty cool until it becomes a club at night.

Tokyo Garden is alright but it's just a little too much restaurant.

You can get a beer at Grizzly Stadium but it's obviously not a bar and they charge admission.

And finally Tioga Sequoia Beer Garden, which, if you live Downtown, is so far away that it might as well be in the Tower District.

I know there's more. I kept thinking of places like Toledito's and Cosmo's. All of these places are great at what they do, but what they do is not "be a bar Downtown."

And at its best, Peeve's was a great bar Downtown.

So thanks, Peeve's, and goodbye. I, for one, will miss you.

  1. I do live downtown and Tioga-Sequoia is close to me because I shun Granville development :D

  2. I'll miss them as well. They were a place you could grab a drink & watch a soccer game. I have to ask other places to change the channel for that, and sometimes I just don't want to find the employee, or they don't know where the remote is, etc.
