Local Totems Bring Good Vibes to Chinatown

by Abby Blackstone, Good Vibes Ombudsman

Hey y’all! First let me introduce myself. My name is Abby Blackstone, and I’m GBFs newest staff writer. I was brought on to fill a void in the points of view here, and my task is a simple one: To report on all of the great things happening in Fresno! The way I see it, Fresno is a sunny city and everywhere you look, we’re on the sunny side.

Now, I’m much too polite to name names, but some of the other writers here can tend to be a little cranky, what with their articles about restaurants they don’t like, or asking innocent politicians a bunch of hard questions. And even though I’m sure that their hearts are in the right place, I think they can come off just a smidge mean spirited.

But not me! All that you’ll ever hear me reporting about are the great things that I see everyday on the streets of our fair city. There’s so much great stuff, I don’t even know where to begin, but here’s something I saw just today that I thought was really, really… Great!

I was over by Central Fish, enjoying Fresno’s scenic and historic Chinatown when something caught my eye in the corner of the parking lot. It looked like someone had to cut down some trees, which made me sad, but then I saw what some mystery artist did with the stumps: carved totems!

Look at this guy, he just looks so wise. And the artist really did a great job on the detail work. It looks like it even has different wood stains on different parts, or maybe that’s just the different heartwood versus the outer stuff. Whatever it is, it looks great!

This one is a bit smaller, and looks like it may still be in progress. Keep up the good work!

This guy looks like he’s about to do a little touchdown dance, like a woody Cam Newton. I like his style!

Whoever the artist is, I would love to hear from you and do an interview! Please reach out to me here at GBF. I’m new here, so the IT department hasn’t set me up with an email yet, but you can email us here. Thanks for making some great public art, that’s the kind of stuff that really makes Fresno great!
