Audie's Olympic

by The Editor

Audie's Olympic is closing. Or something like that.

As far as I know, we've been relatively silent on Audie's. If there was ever a time to write about it, I guess it would be now.

A central theme to our blog, if I had to guess, is that Fresno shouldn't try to be something it's not. A lot of times we hear people say, "Tower District is like Little San Francisco" or "The Mural District is like Little Brooklyn". That kind of talk always makes me sick. Just let Fresno be Fresno.

If you look at your own life and think about the people you know or have known that are the "coolest", chances are you thought they were cool because they were comfortable being who they are, not because they were good at fitting a certain image. (God this is such a banal platitude but apparently Fresno still needs to hear it.)

In the words of the American author/poet Charles Bukowski: "Don't try."

Audie's is a place that doesn't try.

The goofy crap above the bar? It's as if the owner is saying, "I like this goofy crap so I'm putting it up there. I don't care what you say."

The shag carpet on the stage? "Shag carpet is comfortable as all hell. Don't pretend like it's not."

The broken everything in the bathroom? "Come on, you're drunk. You don't care if someone walks into the stall while you're peeing in a toilet overflowing with poo and then you can't wash your hands cause the sink's broken even though you're pretty sure you just caught a disease despite the fact that you were careful not to touch a damn thing."

Their website which only has one functioning item (and it's only semi-functioning at that. It's a picture of a girl with a scary smile wearing a sexy read bikini. It appears to be an advertisement for a modeling agency, but if you click on it it takes you to the site for the people who designed the non-functioning website.)

"This 'internet thing' isn't gonna catch on anyways."

Ah, Audie's. Thanks for everything. We'll miss you.
