Craft Brew Bar Review pt. 3: Fresno Brewing Co.
by Mike Schnauz
I want to like Fresno Brewing Co. I love the spot. I love walking out and feeling like I'm in a real downtown. But they've got some problems.
First, they have live music. Not at all the time, but enough to where I can't count on going there and not being blasted with it. Or I'll walk in to find a bunch of kids watching a movie so I have to shut up.
It's not that I'm against music venues. That's why we have Fulton 55 and Audie's. They're music venues first and bars second. Too many places try to do the reverse. I don't even mind if it's some guy at a coffee shop with his mic turned down. I hate being blasted, and I'm sure a few of you agree with me.
I read somewhere once, and I can't find it now so I could be wrong, that the guy who owns Fresno Brewing Co. said something to effect of, "We only serve good beers here. If you're looking for a Bud Light, you'll have to go somewhere else." I agree, to a point. I like good beer and Bud Light is gross, but that doesn't mean you can't serve anything cheap. Serve some PBR or High Life. These beers have more flavor than Bud Light, but yet someone who likes to watch their money can still have a good time. Anything else is just pretentious.
My final issue (although Sny suggested that we include something about their ambiance being little more than a cafeteria) is that these guys are calling themselves a "brewing co." This is completely misleading. Sure, they brew. Coffee. And they serve beer, but they don't brew it themselves. Let's all just agree that you can't call yourselves a brewing co. unless you brew beer. (Unless they started brewing beer since the last time I was there, in which case, I'm sorry).
I really wish this place would do what they're doing better. But for now, the only good thing I have to say about it is that I like walking out of there.
Fresno Brewing Co., 6/10

"a bunch of kids watching a movie...". Good god , you are such a cranky old man. No wonder this blog hates everything.

They are getting things in order to start brewing beer soon. They probably solved all the kinks, last time I checked.
ReplyDeleteHmm, this is good to know
