Mike Schnauz Reviews "Fierce Creatures"

In my opening statement on this blog, I made mention of a band thinking they were the next Arcade Fire because they had a gratuitous amount of people on stage. Many commenters thought this to be a jab at Fresno's own Fierce Creatures. Well, it was not. But since you all pointed it out to me, I realize that you are totally right. So I'm going to carry on with your line of thought and review these "Fierce Creatures."

I've seen Fierce Creatures a number of times. They make decent enough music---even if it's a bit derivative. But most bands start out as being derivative and carry on from there, so I, at least, can forgive them for this. I'll admit that I even own their album. I don't listen to it all that often, but my hard drive is nearly full of music that I don't listen to that often.

No, Fierce Creatures are alright. Much better than a band I saw play at Babylon one night whose main song consisted of the phrase, "show me your mother fucking titties" over and over again. Compared to these guys, Fierce Creatures are gods.

My criticism of them comes from their unnecessary stage show. I'm usually pretty trashed by the time they get on stage, but I'm almost positive they have three guitar players. What does that 3rd guitar add that can't be covered by 2?

And what about that token pretty girl who plays the tambourine? She's about as useless as Fergie.

Oh, and my favorite bit: the guy who just stands at the back banging a tom-tom. I guess "stand" is a misleading term since he's rocking out so hard that he can't even keep anything that closely resembles a steady rhythm.

Fierce Creatures are all about theatrics. It's like they're trying to distract you from realizing their music is only OK.

So to Fierce Creatures, I say, trim the fat and focus on your music. People will stop coming out to your shows if your music sucks. Unless you become the next Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

To the reader, I say, these guys only deserve a 6.5/10. And that might be generous, because I can only imagine what someone like Pitchfork would give them. I can only pray it would be better than their review of Jet's Shine On.

  1. Say what you will about the band but that girl is actually a pretty good singer! If you have their Mostri Feroci EP, you need look no further than "The Great White" to find evidence of that fact. If there's a criticism to lay towards her, its that she doesn't sing enough!
